Balance in the principles of art and design refers to the visual distribution of elements to create a sense of stability and harmony in a composition. It ensures that no single part of an artwork overpowers the rest, allowing for a pleasing and cohesive arrangement. Balance can be symmetrical, where elements are evenly distributed on both sides, asymmetrical, where different elements create equilibrium through contrast, or radial, where elements radiate from a central point. Effective balance helps guide the viewer’s eye and enhances the overall impact of the artwork.

1. Symmetrical Balance

Also called formal balance, this occurs when both sides of an artwork are mirror images or very similar. The elements are evenly distributed, creating a sense of stability, order, and calm. For example, a building with identical sides shows symmetrical balance.

2. Asymmetrical Balance

Also called informal balance, this happens when the two sides of an artwork are different but still feel visually balanced. Artists achieve this by carefully arranging elements of different sizes, colors, or textures so that they balance each other out. Asymmetry often feels more dynamic and interesting than perfect symmetry.

3. Radial Balance

This type of balance occurs when elements radiate outward from a central point, like the spokes of a wheel, a flower, or a mandala. Radial balance draws the viewer’s eye to the center and creates a sense of movement and harmony.
