Art Programs

The visual arts program at Mount Diablo High School is designed as a three-level pathway that helps students grow from beginning artists into independent and advanced creative thinkers. 

Art 1 introduces students to the foundations of visual art through drawing, painting, design, sketchbook work, and the study of the elements and principles of art. Students explore a variety of media while building technical skills, creativity, and confidence. 

Art 2 expands on these foundations by developing more advanced techniques in drawing, painting, printmaking, sculpture, and mixed media, while encouraging students to strengthen their personal artistic style and critical thinking. 

AP Art is the highest level course intended for highly motivated students who are serious about pursuing art at an advanced level. In this course, students create a professional-quality portfolio, explore personal themes and sustained investigations, participate in critiques, and prepare for the AP Art and Design portfolio submission through independent studio practice and conceptual development. Together, these three courses provide students with a comprehensive visual arts education that supports creativity, artistic growth, and college or career readiness in the arts.
