Radial Balance in Tiles & Mandelas
Radial balance is a key design principle used to create harmony and unity in both mandalas and Islamic tile designs. In radial balance, visual elements are arranged around a central point and repeated outward in a circular or symmetrical pattern. This method guides the viewer’s eye evenly in all directions, creating a sense of calm, order, and infinity. In mandalas, shapes, lines, and colors radiate from the center to symbolize wholeness and balance, while in Islamic tile design, geometric forms repeat with precise symmetry to reflect spiritual harmony, mathematical order, and the idea of unity within complexity.
Mandalas originated in ancient Hindu and Buddhist traditions as spiritual and meditative diagrams representing the universe and inner balance. Islamic tile design developed across the Islamic world from the 7th century onward, emphasizing geometry, repetition, and radial symmetry as a way to express divine perfection without figurative imagery. Persian rug design also uses this same radial system, often featuring a central medallion with patterns radiating outward into borders. This shared method connects these art forms across cultures, using radial balance to express unity, rhythm, and a deep connection between art, spirituality, and mathematics.
