Nature & Environment
Sketching ordinary subjects from nature—such as plants, flowers, trees, insects, birds, pets, wildlife, rivers, waterfalls, mountains, the sun, moon, creeks, and ponds—helps artists develop strong observation skills and a deeper connection to the world around them. These everyday subjects may seem simple, but they offer endless variety in shape, texture, movement, and light. By drawing what we see in nature, we train our eyes to notice details like the curve of a leaf, the rhythm of branches, the flow of water, or the way light touches fur, feathers, or stone. Sketching from life encourages mindfulness, patience, and authenticity, making our drawings feel more alive and personal.
A simple and effective method for sketching nature:
Observe first – Spend a moment quietly looking at your subject. Notice its overall shape, proportions, and direction of movement.
Start with basic shapes – Lightly sketch simple forms (circles, ovals, lines) to block in the structure.
Refine the form – Gradually adjust proportions and add larger details while keeping your lines loose.
Add details and textures – Include smaller features like veins, bark patterns, fur, ripples, or feathers.
Define light and shadow – Use gentle shading to show volume, depth, and mood.
Keep it natural – Don’t aim for perfection; focus on capturing the character and feeling of the subject.
This step-by-step approach builds confidence and makes sketching nature an enjoyable and rewarding practice alongside video tutorials.
