Drawing Flying Boxes in One-Point Perspective
Students will create a pencil drawing using one-point perspective to show depth and form through floating cubes (“flying boxes”).
Draw a horizon line and place a vanishing point at the center.
Sketch five simple cubes above and below the horizon using one-point perspective.
Practice shading cubes to show three-dimensional form.
Perspective: A technique to show depth and distance on a flat surface.

Set Up: On your drawing paper, lightly draw a horizon line and place a vanishing point at the center.
Start Boxes: Sketch several front-facing squares above and below the horizon line.
Perspective Lines: From each corner of your squares, draw light lines back to the vanishing point.
Complete the Boxes: Use vertical and horizontal lines to complete the cube shapes within the perspective guides.
Clean Up: Erase overlapping lines and construction marks to define each box.
Shading: Add light, medium, and dark values to each box to show depth and light direction.
Finalize: Review your work, add variety in cube sizes and placement, and ensure your presentation is neat.
How did you use perspective to show depth in your artwork?
What was the most challenging part of drawing the boxes?
How did shading help make your drawing more realistic?
Reflect on your artistic process. What did you learn about perspective and form through this assignment? Describe any techniques or skills that helped you complete your work.
