Photographing and Editing Artwork for a Portfolio
Taking clear photographs of your artwork is important for building a strong art portfolio, such as an AP Art portfolio, a personal portfolio website, or for printing your work on products. Using a DSLR camera helps capture accurate colors, sharp details, and high resolution. With proper lighting, correct camera settings, and simple editing in Photoshop, you can create professional-looking images that represent your artwork clearly and professionally.
Place the artwork on a flat wall or vertical board.
Use two lights (or bright natural light) placed on each side at about 45° angles to avoid shadows and glare.
Make sure the artwork is straight and evenly lit.
Use a tripod if possible to keep the camera steady.
Use Manual (M) mode if possible.
Recommended starting settings:
ISO: 100 (for clean, low-noise images)
Aperture: f/8 – f/11 (for sharp focus across the artwork)
Shutter Speed: Adjust depending on lighting (often around 1/60 – 1/125)
White Balance: Daylight or Custom
File Type: RAW + JPEG if available
Focus: Manual focus or single-point autofocus on the center of the artwork
Tips:
Keep the camera perfectly parallel to the artwork.
Fill most of the frame with the artwork but leave a small border around it.
Open the photo in Photoshop.
Use Crop Tool to remove background and straighten the edges.
Use Image → Adjustments → Levels or Curves to improve brightness and contrast. or use Adjustment Layers
If needed, use Filter → Camera Raw Filter for small adjustments.
Make sure the artwork looks natural and accurate, not over-edited.
Use these settings for high-quality portfolio images:
Resolution: 300 dpi (for printing)
Color Mode: RGB
File Format:
JPEG (High Quality 10–12) for portfolios and websites
TIFF or PSD if you want a high-quality master file
File Size: Around 2000–4000 pixels on the longest side for portfolio submissions.
