Your first project is an apron. You'll measure, make or use a pattern, lay it out on fabric, cut it and sew it step by step.
Cotton or canvas fabric (about 1 yard), matching thread, 2 yards of cotton twill tape or fabric strips for straps, pattern paper, ruler, tailor's chalk, pins, fabric shears.
Option A – use the class apron pattern. Option B – draft your own:
Measure: width across your chest, length from chest to knee, and waist width.
Draw a rectangle on pattern paper: width x length.
Shape the top: mark the bib width and curve from the bib down to the waist.
Add 5/8" seam allowance (or a 1" hem) on all edges.
Fold the paper in half and draw one side so both sides match – "cut on fold."
Label it: your name, "Apron Front – cut 1 on fold," and a grainline arrow.
Press the fabric first.
Fold the fabric right sides together, selvages lined up.
Place the "fold" edge of the pattern on the fabric fold.
Line up the grainline arrow parallel to the selvage – measure both ends.
Pin or use weights, then trace with chalk.
Cut on the line with fabric shears; cut the straps and pocket the same way.
Finish the side edges: fold 1/4", press, fold 1/4" again, press, stitch.
Hem the top edge the same way.
Clip and stitch the curved armhole edges.
Hem the bottom with a 1" hem.
Pocket: hem the top, press the other edges under, pin and topstitch it on.
Attach the neck strap and waist ties; stitch a box with an X for strength.
Press the finished apron.
Straight, even hems
Backstitched at every start and end
Pocket square and secure
Straps strong, with box-X stitching
Pressed, with threads trimmed
When everything is checked, show your apron to Mrs. Chehrehsa and submit a photo to Google Classroom.
